Off-road vehicle design graduate Daniel Balmer, from Gloucester, had admitted punching Robert Simpson twice in the crowded student bar at the college in Edgmond, near Newport, last October.

Mr Simpson suffered a fractured skull and loss of hearing in one ear for life following the attack.

But Balmer, 22, said he was trying to defend himself and feared a fight would begin after being slapped on the back.

A jury at Shrewsbury Crown Court, which heard Balmer was of previous good character, found him not guilty.
