Concerned residents have called for new speed calming measures on a road set to be included on the route for the Olympic Torch in Newport after a car ploughed through a wall.

The silver Rover vehicle smashed into a garden wall on the junction of Broadway and Stafford Road at about 1am on Monday.

The car mounted the pavement, knocking over a road sign and trees before finally coming to rest witha shattered windscreen.

The scene of the crash is near a school crossing and will form part of the route for the Olympic Torch procession on May 30.

Now Sylvia and John Hayward, who own the property, have called for action after claiming motorists regularly travel in excess of the speed limit in the area.

Mrs Hayward said: "Cars do speed down the road. It's only about 12 months ago that a car crashed just a few metres away and took out the lamppost.

"That's two serious incidents in a relatively short space of time. Stafford Road is particularly bad at night because people don't think there is anyone around.

"We've got to be grateful because this could have been a lot worse. It could've gone over our lawn and into the house."
