Could this be the most potholed road in Shropshire? New Street in Newport has been left so battered and bruised following a succession of cold winters that more than 100 mini craters have sprouted.

The crumbling road is so bad that the Mayor of Newport has described it as worse than Beirut. Resident Eva Allan is calling for the road to be improved. She said she even got down on her hands and knees to count the holes – 106 in total.

The former mayor said: "The road is awful. There are some bad roads in Newport, but New Street is the worst as far as I'm concerned."

Mrs Allan said she saw a cyclist collide with a pothole and almost fly over the handlebars. "The council would be liable if someone got injured," she said.

Hundreds of vehicles use New Street every day to enter and exit the public car park, which is just off the High Street.

This month Telford & Wrekin Council announced that more than £18 million is to be ploughed into improving potholed and damaged roads across the borough over the next three years.

And the local authority confirmed New Street will be repaired during that period but Boughey Road, Hampton Drive, Masons Place and Granville Avenue are all ahead in the queue.

The Mayor of Newport, Councillor Roy Scammell, said: "I welcome the news that £18 million is to be spent on improving roads in Newport and across the borough.

"But in Newport, New Street has to be the number one priority. It's worse than Beirut.

"We've had a number of cold winters that have caused this damage but there really is no excuse for it to be this bad."

Russell Griffin, spokesman for Telford & Wrekin Council, said: "New Street is on the three-year programme and this work will be programmed in year two or three to tie in with other work in Newport."
