Newport was transformed into a sea or red and white as hundreds of people celebrated St George's Day. About 700 people lined the High Street as St George, the dragon and Morris dancers paraded.

Deputy Mayor Councillor Tony Forrester said Saturday's event was a spectacular sight.

He said: "It's becoming an established event in Newport now and a lot of credit has to go to the committee, and in particular Peter Scott, for that.

"It's really good to see people taking a pride in England. All the other countries in the UK make a big thing of their day – we should too."

The St George's Day celebrations will continue in Telford this weekend with a free family fun day in Town Park Arena.

Saturday's event will be opened by a procession of Telford schoolchildren from outside the town's library, led by a knight in arms.

They will enter the Arena just before 11am.

Activities will run until 5pm and include medieval jousting, a falconry display, a combat display, a George and the Dragon puppet theatre and arming and dressing the medieval knight. There will also be a treasure hunt around the Telford Town Park.

Councillor Arnold England, for Telford & Wrekin Council, urged people to join in.
