A councillor has told Telford & Wrekin Council to 'stop messing around with Newport' after criticising plans for housing on greenfield land when several derelict sites already exist in the town.

Councillor Tim Nelson unleashed a tirade of criticism on the borough council after viewing plans for 34 houses in Maynards Croft at last night's planning committee meeting.

He said: "We should send a message to Telford & Wrekin to stop messing around with Newport.

"Stop trying to build on green field land and start looking at derelict land in the middle of the town.

"When will the old Serck Audco be developed? Or Water Lane?"

Councillors voted unanimously against the Taylor Wimpey proposals for a mini-housing estate, which include demolishing one property for access.

Members said the development would cause traffic problems and would impinge on residents living in Maynards Croft.

Councillor Peter Scott said: "The residents are not in favour but this is deeper than just not in my back yard. This is an unnecessary proposal I believe. The only people who will benefit are the developers."

Councillor Roy Scammell, mayor of Newport, said: "This would take 12 to 18 months to build, with lorries going in and out every day."

Councillor Tony Forrester questioned Taylor Wimpey's report which stated that 40 vehicles a day currently enter and exit the estate.
