A man in his early 20s has died after the car he was driving left the road and smashed into a tree near Newport in the early hours of today.

A man in his early 20s has died after the car he was driving left the road and smashed into a tree near Newport in the early hours of today.

Ambulance crews tried to save the man, who has not been named, after the crash on the A41, near to Stanford Bridge, Sambrook, just before 1am.

But despite the best efforts of paramedics he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The road was closed until around 7.45am as police and fire worked to clear debris from the scene.

Police spokesman Chris Ammonds said: "Police were called out just before 1am with one Ford vehicle having left the road.

"A male in his early 20s was found unconscious. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The family has been informed and the coroner will be informed."

Diversions were put in place within 20 minutes on the A41/B5062 and the Mill Green Crossroads.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Crews arrived to find a car that had hit a tree. The man had multiple injuries and advanced life support was immediately carried out.

"Unfortunately nothing could be done."
