A rival video to one showing Newtown as a 'ghost town' has been posted online, showing the town's businesses that are open.

Last week, an anonymous resident known only as CutPryce posted a video set to The Specials single Ghost Town, showing all the town's closed businesses, attracting almost 15,000 views. But now someone calling themselves MsChezwiz has posted a video to Simple Minds' Alive and Kicking.

The new video shows the town's successful businesses.

In a statement, MsChezwiz said: "Let's say the cup's half full not half empty, poor old Newtown, it's not that bad.

"Obviously, I'm no film maker but I do have a business in Newtown and have no intention of closing my doors. I actually thought the Ghost Town video was fantastic. It made people sit up and think about what's happening around us.

"I take my hat off to him, but we can either roll over and think 'oh-well what's the point' or try and take some positives out of it all and move forward."

The new video has attracted more than 1,000 views, with people including Montgomeryshire AM Russell George backing it.

Yesterday, Mr George urged First Minister Carwyn Jones to watch the Ghost Town video to see how desperately Mid Wales needed Welsh Assembly help.

Tony Haskins, press officer for the town's Chamber of Trade, said scaremongering about the state of the shops and traffic problems was putting people off going there.

He said: "Members of Newtown Chamber of Trade have expressed sadness and dismay at yet another knocking of the town by the posting the 'Ghost Town' video on YouTube.

"How easy it is to criticise, yet how hard it is for people to be positive and work towards overcoming the problems and do something to turn the tide."
