Rugby chiefs are probing claims of racial abuse after a match between Market Drayton and Telford Hornets was abandoned amid angry scenes.

Players from Market Drayton RFC walked off the pitch and refused to finish the game.

The Hornets were reportedly 12-0 in front at Hinkshay Road, Dawley, on Saturday when Drayton walked off after an hour of the Midlands Four West (North) game.

The matter is now being investigated by the Rugby Football Union disciplinary department, with both clubs given until tomorrow morning to make representations.

RFU Midlands spokesman Paul Bolton said: "We have been made aware of an incident in the Telford versus Market Drayton game and it is being investigated.

"Our disciplinary department in Twickenham have been made aware by the Midlands League committee and both clubs are co-operating fully.

The RFU doesn't condone racism. Rugby is a sport for all colours, creeds, shapes and sizes."

Telford Hornets today refused to comment.

Market Drayton RFC spokesman Rob Thomas was unavailable for comment but in a match report he said: "After 62 minutes an incident occurred, which resulted in the Market Drayton players deciding to take the unusual measure of leaving the the pitch."
