Councillors in Newport have opposed plans to build more than 500 homes and a supermarket in the town.

About 100 people packed into a public meeting last night at Burton Borough School to hear members of Newport Town Council's planning committee unanimously vote against two applications – one for 215 houses on Audley Avenue and another for 350 houses and a supermarket in Station Road.

The meeting had been moved from the Guildhall to Burton Borough School to accommodate the large audience.

The two applications will now be considered by members of Telford & Wrekin's plans board, with a final decision expected to be made in the new year.

Councillors said that the number of houses proposed was out of proportion for the town and that a 60,000sq ft supermarket would kill the High Street.
