A thief snatched bracelets worth more than £2,000 from the hands of a shop worker at a Welshpool jewellers'. The man burst into Wel-shpool Jewellers before stealing the jewellery as the assistant showed it to a customer.

The incident happened at about 4pm yesterday in the High Street store.

It is the second similar theft to hit jewellers in Powys in the past three weeks, with a tray of wedding rings, also valued at £2,000, being stolen from Woodroffe's Jewellers in Newtown on August 23.

John Fox, owner of Welshpool Jewellers, said today that staff had been left 'shocked' by the theft, but said he was hopeful the thief would be caught.

He said: "Luckily we have a very good CCTV system here at the shop and it has caught the incident and there are some very clear images of the man and the tape is now in possession of the police who are looking at it. Because of this footage I remain confident and hopeful that the man will be caught."

Last month, Dyfed-Powys Police issued CCTV footage of a man stealing the rings from Woodroffe's in Market Street, Newtown.

At the time, staff said a man walked in 'looking suspicious' and swept a tray of wedding rings before fleeing.

On December 1 last year, armed robbers raided County Goldsmiths in Church Street, Welshpool, as manager Stewart Woodings was closing the shop.
