A sneak thief dubbed a 'prowler' by police in Newtown has struck for the 15th time in the past month, officers said today. Cash, CDs, wallets and purses have been stolen in the raids.

The thief has targeted parked cars in the late-night raids with the latest in Market Street on Tuesday night.

Dyfed-Powys Police today urged drivers to ensure they take everything out of their car at the end of the day.

Patrols will also be stepped up around the town during the early hours to look out for the thief.

Sian George, force spokeswoman, said: "Although we live in a safe place, drivers shouldn't get complacent.

"As well as ensuring they lock their vehicles, drivers should still remove valuables.

"The most recent incident happened in Market Street in the early hours of Tuesday when valuables were taken from inside a car."

Miss George said money, tins, CDs, wallets and purses had been stolen in the raids.

Another possible theft which may be linked with the prowler saw golf clubs and a trolley stolen from Newtown Golf Club car park.

Miss George added: "Residents are to be aware of a prowler in the Newtown area and ensure that their valuables are removed from their vehicles every night.

"Recently there has been a spate of incidents which has resulted in us appealing for everyone to take extra care in securing their homes and vehicles."

Anyone with information on the thefts should call 0845 330 2000.
