Vandals went on a wrecking spree at a community skate park in Newport, littering it with smashed glass and aluminium cans. Parents and children found rubbish all over the site in Norbroom Park on Saturday morning.

Paul Degg, 47, a parent who was at the park, said: "There was lots of broken glass and cans littered all over the place. It was like there had been a music festival. It was unbelievable, it was all over the ball park area too."

"We've been provided a great facility like this, people should take better care of it and not abuse it."

Calls were made to Telf- ord & Wrekin Council to clear the mess at the Vineyard Road site but young members of Newport Sk8 & Ride, who manage the site, swung into action before the council cleaners arrived.

Newport Sk8 & Ride secretary Marc Simpson said: "The kids really look after the site. It's an excellent demonstration of how they look after their own facility."

The skate park was opened in 2009 by Princess Anne and cost about £200,000.

A Telford & Wrekin Council spokesman said: "The out of hours service received a call from organisers of a BMX event at Newport Skate Park on Saturday informing us there was some glass scattered around the park.

"We attended the scene before the event was due to start and cleared up the mess to ensure the event could go ahead safely. The clean-up was started by the community group Newport Sk8 & Ride who the council works in partnership with."
