The victim, who has not yet been named, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, the A483 near Dolfor, Newtown.

The smash led to the road being closed for more than eight hours as the emergency services dealt with the scene.

It involved a Ford Mondeo car and a Scania HGV and happened shortly after 11.30am yesterday.

Motorists were left facing lengthy delays because of diversions around the road closure.

Constable Bill Cowan, of Knighton Police, said the driver of the lorry had escaped uninjured.

He said: "The Mondeo car was being driven by a 35- year-old female from the Swansea area who sadly died at the scene. Her next of kin have been informed.

"The HGV driver was uninjured. As a result of this collision the main A483 road between Dolfor and Crossgates was closed to all traffic for more than eight hours.

"The Mid Wales roads policing unit are investigating the collision and anyone who has any information is urged to get in touch with the police."

John Evans, communications manager for Powys County Council, said diversions had been put in place at Crossgates, near Llandrindod Wells and in Newtown.

"The road is a trunk road and had to be closed for more than eight hours and some motorists did face lengthy delays" he said.

"We had highways officers redirecting traffic along the back roads but lorries and other heavy good vehicles had to use an alternative route through Llanidloes.

And two people have been take to hospital following a two-car crash near Welshpool. Emergency services were called to the A490 between Welshpool and Guilsfield shortly before 6.40pm yesterday.

Antony Topazio, for Dyfed-Powys Police said two men had been taken to hospital following the crash but their injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

A spokesman for the Mid and West Wales Fire Service said one of the men had been released from the vehicle before crews from Welshpool had arrived.
