A Shropshire swan embroiled in a bitter love triangle has died.

The body of Albert, who at the start of March stunned onlookers in Newport by brawling with love rival Louis in the middle of the street, was found in Newport Canal yesterday.

Water bailiff Alan Evans, who keeps a close eye on the swans, said the battle with Louis over female swan Sarah had weakened an already ageing Albert.

"The fight with Louis took its toll on him, Albert was pretty old when it happened," said Mr Evans.

"A postmortem will take place to find out exactly how he died but I think it was of a heart attack."

He said Albert's partner Mildred saw he was dead and may have to be found a new flock if things get worse.

The duel between Albert and Louis, which saw them fighting on the B5062 into Edgmond, is understood to have been a misunderstanding between the birds.

Louis caught Albert cosying up to Sarah on Cheney Hill island in Newport after confusing her with Mildred who had been taken to Stapeley Grange Wildlife Centre in Cheshire for treatment to her foot.
