A Shropshire man has been taken to hospital with breathing difficulties after cleaning his bathroom with industrial strength chemicals.

Ten firefighters and one ambulance crew were called to the man's house on Botfield Close in Randlay, Telford, just after 8.30pm yesterday after he mixed hydrochloric acid with a toilet cleaner.

The man, believed to be in his 40s, was treated by paramedics at the scene after inhaling the fumes given off by the chemicals.

Tim Hughes, watch manager at Telford Fire Station, said the man had to be led from the house by his wife after he reacted to the noxious fumes.

"When we arrived the male had been evacuated and taken to hospital by land ambulance." he said.

"It was caused by the fumes from mixing household chemicals while cleaning."

Mr Hughes added firefighters ventilated the home and added the woman inside the house was unharmed.
