A free range poultry unit housing up to 16,000 birds could be built in south Shropshire. Plans have been submitted for a poultry building for egg production at Egremont Farm in Longville in the Dale, near Church Stretton.

Two buildings at the site accommodate about 22,000 birds. Egg production has been carried out at the farm since 1998.

No objections have been raised by Shropshire Council's public protection or highways officials, but Shropshire Fire and Rescue has requested adequate access for fire vehicles and has called for provisions to ensure a sufficient water supply.

Rushbury Parish Council has been unable to discuss the issue due to the snow.

A design and access statement submitted by planning agents Nigel Thorns Planning Consultancy states: "The site lies within the open countryside, where the predominant land use is for agriculture.

"Due to the siting of the building, the surrounding topography, the natural landscape features and the choice of building colour, the building would not be visually intrusive and would relate well to the existing development.

"Due to the positioning of the building and the distances involved, there will be no detrimental impact upon any residential property."

Consultation ends on December 27 with a view to a decision in the new year.
