Shropshire Council is eyeing up a deal to snap up one of the last former Woolworths sites in the county.
But the news has sparked fears from town centre traders in Market Drayton that the site, empty since December 2008, would no longer be used as a shop.
The council today refused to comment on what it might use the building for, amid speculation it could become an archive.
Head of property services Andrew Stirling said it was looking at what it "might be suitable for".
