market-draytonThe new mayor of Market Drayton has criticised the "small minority" of people who attack the town and has called for them to "put their heads above the parapet".

Councillor Roy Aldcroft leapt to the defence of the area after it came under fire in a group set up on social networking site Facebook for people to discuss the town.

Some comments claimed that the town was a bad place to live with nothing to do.

Others congratulated those who managed to "escape".

Councillor Aldcroft, who was elected town mayor on Thursday, said these people should do something about it.

He said they should take responsibility for their area, and take the chance to attend council meetings and ask councillors what is being done to improve the area.

"It's a shame a small minority of people insist on constantly knocking the town without actually putting anything into it," he said.

"They are willing to criticise the town, but not willing to put their head above the parapet and do something about it.

"There are a lot of people who do work very hard to promote the town during this recession.

"There are always those who will criticise, never constructively, and it's apathy," he added.

"They will always moan but never do anything."
