But the animal, who should really have been receiving his mother's milk, failed to survive. Karen Booth, senior veterinary surgeon at Vets Now, Wellington, said she was greatly saddened to hear he had died at 4.30am. "I believe someone had stolen it from a farm and let it loose as some sort of joke," she said.

Karen Booth, senior veterinary surgeon at the out-of-hours Vets Now service in Wellington, said she was greatly saddened to hear it had died.

"The piglet was found by a local teenager at around 2.30am on Sunday looking lost and disorientated," she said.

"He got into a cab, took the piglet home to his parents and they tried to feed it milk from a bottle without success before bringing it in to us.

"I can only assume that someone thought it funny to steal a piglet and let it loose as a prank among revellers in Wellington."
