The founder of Bridgnorth's world famous Haydn Festival and one of the county's best-known musicians has died at the age of 63, following a six-month battle with cancer.
John Reid died at his home in Newport this morning - the day the festival should have opened.
Mr Reid's illness led to this year's festival being scrapped, but as recently as January he was vowing next year's event would go ahead.
The festival, which began in 1993, has consistently featured a line-up of top international performers and audiences from across the world.
His wife, Sandy, today described him as an "amazing" man who lived for music. "Only last night I reminded him that he would have been doing the last rehearsals for the festival opening tonight," she said.
"He loved the music of Haydn and one of his driving forces was sharing his love by bringing good quality music to local people.
"He chose Bridgnorth as the venue for the festival because he felt it was so suitable and looked like a mini Saltzburg.
"He was disappointed that this year's event had to be cancelled. We're still hoping next year's event will go ahead, which will be held to mark the bi-centenary of Haydn's death."
Councillor Ed Shirley said Mr Reid brought classical music to Bridgnorth, adding: "I only hope we can find someone to take up his mantle because it would be a tremendous tribute to him."
Mr Reid's funeral will be held at St Nicholas Church, in Newport.
