It was delayed for three weeks after an unexpected gas main was found when road works were in place.

Tesco today said the store itself was finished and staff had begun stocking shelves.

The store will employ more than 480 people, including about 300 staff from the old store in Arlington Way.

Julian Walker-Palin, Tesco's corporate affairs manager for the West Midlands, said: "There was a small delay after a gas main was found when we were carrying out road works but we will be opening on April 23 now."

The roadworks, at Whitchurch Road's junctions with Harlescott Lane and Featherbed Lane, were due to take three weeks but ended up being in place for nearly seven weeks after the discovery of the gas main.

The store, which is on the site of Shrewsbury's former Cattle Market, will open at 8am on April 23 - St George's Day - with an official launch at 10am.
