Sci-fi fans dress up for event

Visitors to the Midlands Movie Comic Media event at Telford International Centre were getting the chance to meet some of their on-screen heroes, including characters from Red Dwarf, Doctor Who and Star Trek. It is the first time the event, which is usually held twice a year in London, has been moved to a location outside of the capital. Warwick Davis, who played Professor Flitwick in the Harry Potter films, was due to attend the one-day event after coming back from filming for the new installment of the CS Lewis' Narnia tales. Thousands of fans of science fiction and fantasy films and television were visiting an exhibition centre in Telford today for a massive convention.

Visitors to the Midlands Movie Comic Media event at Telford International Centre were getting the chance to meet some of their on-screen heroes, including characters from Red Dwarf, Doctor Who and Star Trek.

It is the first time the event, which is usually held twice a year in London, has been moved to a location outside of the capital.

Warwick Davis, who played Professor Flitwick in the Harry Potter films, was due to attend the one-day event after coming back from filming for the new installment of the CS Lewis' Narnia tales.Kenny Baker, famous for playing the robot R2D2 in the Star Wars films, was also due to make an appearance.

The movie and comic extravaganza was also attracting Gareth David Lloyd - Ianto from the new BBC hit series Torchwood - as well as Chris Barrie, who played Rimmer in the BBC series Red Dwarf and starred with Angelina Jolie in the Tomb Raider films.

The crowds were being entertained by characters in costume from Star Wars and Doctor Who, including Stormtroopers, Daleks and Cybermen.

There were also about 100 stalls selling items and several interactive areas in the exhibition including Anime, Manga, games, Dance Dance Revolution, Yu-Gi-Oh and robot zones.

Bryan Coney, marketing and promotional manager for the Expo, said: "The new Midlands MCM Expo show is expected to attract more than 5,000 people.

"It will be a great day out with interactive areas including, Anime, Manga, games and robots."

Visitors to the event will also get to enjoy competitions, face painting for children and thousands of free giveaways. The Expo is supported by Telford Shopping Centre and Odeon Cinemas.
