Shrewsbury and Stratford-upon-Avon inseparable for Monopoly game

Monopoly chiefs may need to dust down their trusty dice in a bid to split Stratford-upon-Avon and Shrewsbury in a race to have a board named after their town.

The two towns, one famous for Charles Darwin the other for the World's most famous bard are locked neck and neck in a race to 'Pass Go'.

"It's possible we may literally have to roll the dice at a place equidistant between the two like Kidderminster," said Graham Barnes, spokesman for the makers of the proposed new board Winning Moves UK.

"That's how close the vote is. These two are well clear of the other three in the race. There is less than two per cent between the two towns but I can't say which is in the lead. But it is fair to say they are well ahead of the third place slot which is Gloucester."

He added polls close on Monday so townspeople should take the opportunity to cast their vote to ensure the town gets as many nominations as possible.

Winning Moves UK is making the game under license from Hasbro.

Mr Barnes said: "The board will hit shop shelves this October and showcase 22 prized property landmarks from the winning location.

"Once we have chosen the winner we will be asking members of the town to vote once again for the landmarks they would like to see included on the board."

The five locations shortlisted by Monopoly chiefs last month were Gloucester, Royal Leamington Spa, Shrewsbury, Stratford-upon-Avon and Warwick.

The search for the town the board will be based upon began with a shortlist of 25 locations in the western half of the Midlands from Gloucester in the south to Telford in the north and west to near the Welsh border.

Mr Barnes said: "Voting closes this Monday at midnight. An announcement of the winner will be made in the winning town next month.

"I would like to say thank you to everyone who has taken the trouble to vote and look forward to the outcome."

Mayor of Shrewsbury, Councillor Miles Kenny urged people to get behind Shrewsbury. "There are only a couple of days left to get that vote in so I urge everyone to vote and to vote now."
