Classical music festival returns to Gregynog
A prestigious classical musical festival is returning to its roots this summer, with tickets now on sale.
The Gregynog Festival will be at Gregynog itself on June 17 and 18.
The historic hall at Gregynog, near Newtown, will be brought to life with performances, exhibitions and talks, beginning with Jeanne Dolmetsch's talk on her grandfather Arnold Dolmetsch, the early music pioneer.
Recorder virtuoso Michala Petri along with harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani will then perform repertoire associated with Dolmetsch, and the Ricercar Consort, the Belgian instrumental ensemble directed by Philippe Pierlot, will close the concerts at Gregynog Hall on the Sunday afternoon.
Mahan Esfahani said he is honoured to be playing in front of Arnold Dolmetsch's granddaughter: He said: "I never thought I would have the chance to present a programme inspired by Dolmetsch in front of one of his family members. It will be a once in a lifetime experience for me and I can't wait.
"Every year the festival delivers excellent musical performances for all to enjoy and at fantastic locations. I am very much looking forward to returning and playing my part in one of the UK's premier classical music events."
This year's Gregynog Festival promises to be the most ambitious yet with Pageantry as its overarching theme, presenting musical performances, dance productions, historical exhibitions and fascinating talks at a host of venues across Wales from June 16 to July 2.
Festival director Rhian Davies added: "Our Pageantry season has something for everyone and our performers are truly world class. I'm thrilled that international stars such as Michala Petri, Mahan Esfahani and the Ricercar Consort will all be taking to the stage at the spiritual home of the festival.
"The presence of Jeanne Dolmetsch gives the festival a great boost and the chance to hear her speak about her grandfather, followed by concerts by such inspirational artists, is an opportunity not to be missed."
Among the other highlights of the 2017 season will be pianist Llyr Williams and saxophonist Amy Dickson at Chirk Castle, an especially commissioned dance piece by Light, Ladd and Emberton performed in the twilight on Harlech Beach, talks by such luminaries as Peter Lord and Hazel Walford Davies, and a closing concert at Harlech Castle by the brass group Septura.
