The Rotary Club of Ludlow is calling for charities and community projects to pitch for a portion of the money as the Ludlow Rotary Cares scheme is launched for a second year.

The scheme was first run last autumn after the club's main fundraising event – Ludlow Dog Day held at Stokesay Court – proved such a success that it raised thousands more than expected.

This year's dog day was also a huge success, seeing thousands of people and pets turn out to enjoy a day of canine-related fun.

Barry Forrester, honorary club secretary, said: "Last year the Rotary Club of Ludlow was able to invest some £3,000 in a range of local community projects through the initiative Ludlow Rotary Cares. This year, following a very successful Ludlow Dog Day held in July, the club is looking to double that figure."

He said Ludlow Rotary Cares was a scheme to encourage funding applications from organisations that could benefit from a modest grant of up to £500.

He said: "The club intends to be very open-minded about the types of activities it will support as long as the project or programme responds to a community need in or within 15 miles of Ludlow and meets its criteria on the giving of grants.

"What the club will need to understand is exactly what the money will be used for, who will benefit from it and how much difference it will make."

Organisations which meet the criteria will need to get their applications in by September 24, he said.

"Those which are shortlisted will be invited to an evening event on October 18 at which they will be asked to explain their project for a few minutes to a small panel.

"There will also be an opportunity to meet other applicants as well as members of the Rotary club. Cheques will be handed out very soon afterwards.

"The club is keen to hear from a wide range of organisations," he said.

More information about the criteria, as well as application forms, can be found at the club's website www.ludlowrotaryclub.org.uk as well as the Ludlow Rotary Club UK Facebook page.
