Sam Manley, 27, will take over as chairman from retired farmer Alan Hobbs, 75, who stands down on March 6 having served his three years in the role.

It is not just Mr Manley's age which is unusual for a society chairman, but also the subject matter of his artwork – he is a freelance science fiction and fantasy illustrator, having worked on such projects as the 2012 Doctor Who card game and covers for sci-fi and fantasy books.

Mr Manley said: "I think my age and occupation can give the LAS a fresh perspective. I got involved with the LAS several years ago because I wanted to connect with local artists and it was the best place to go.

"When I joined I was the youngest member, I was the youngest committee member, the youngest speaker when I gave a digital illustration demo in 2012, and I will be the youngest chairman.

"I love what the LAS does – the exhibitions are great, the evening talks are always fascinating, and the plein air (outdoor) painting trips are a must for anyone looking to keep their skills sharp," he said.

The society will hold its annual general meeting at 7pm on March 6 at Ludlow Assembly Rooms.
