Daybreak still has the wrong presenters

"We have to earn our right to be the morning choice." That quote of the week came from Christine Bleakley as she opened up for the first time about the failing show and the how hurt she has been at the Daybreak backlash.

Christine and co-host Adrian Chiles have been in the firing line since the launch of GMTV's replacement in September.

Now there's no doubt you have to feel sorry for the girl. It's not that she's not likeable. But I don't think she can do anything to change people's opinion. She's just not right for this time of the day and this kind of show.

She added that boyfriend Frank Lampard has been helping her through the tough times, knowing what's it like to be in the spotlight for the wrong reasons and get criticised by the press and public. Perhaps he should give her some tough advice and say now is the time to give in.

I think there may be a tide of sympathy for Adrian and Christine which has now softened the initial reaction of out and out abuse.

But it doesn't mean they can win over enough viewers to make Daybreak a success.

Dan Lobb and Kate Garraway were in again for the pair this week and tackled interviews on the student riots - the hot issue of the week. The difference was unmissable as they dealt with the topic competently and, more importantly, with professionalism.

Dan refused to let the students on the sofa off the hook when it came to the difficult questions but there was none of that glibness that ruins a serious interview when Adrian is leading the questions.

I don't think Kate is any more intelligent than Christine but she certainly seems to address the issues with a much more mature understanding. Maybe it's even having children or being through the odd obstacle or two but the life-experience gives her a more rounded view of the world.

Even with an element of sympathy I can't say I like Adrian - I don't. He belongs on sport where that laddish sense of humour has some significance, but I do like Christine.

I stand by what I have said all along - she is wrong for morning television and may never be right for it but ITV should find something for her to do. She has earned her right to be on the small screen and has worked hard for it.

The bookies dropped the odds significantly on one of them leaving before Christmas. The countdown has begun.
