Shrewsbury's new Primark store moves another step closer
The company that owns Shrewsbury's Charles Darwin Shopping Centre has started work on improvements, including the units for a new Primark store.
UK Commercial Property Trust Limited has announced that it has appointed McLaughlin & Harvey as a contractor for the project, which also involves the upgrading of the centre's ground floor and atrium.
The new Primark is a first for Shrewsbury and the store will be made up of nine existing units to form a 50,000 sq ft flagship branch across two floors.
McLaughlin & Harvey will also undertake a major refurbishment of the public areas on the ground floor and atrium of the shopping centre, including new floors, ceilings and lighting.
The works form part of UK Commercial Property Trust's strategy designed to rebuild income and footfall by offering an "attractive, modern shopping environment that is both appealing to visitors and able to attract new retailers such as Primark and Smiggle".
Smiggle is an Australian stationary brand, which opens its shop at the centre this weekend, creating eight jobs.
The handover of the unit to Primark is expected later this year.
The company will then fit it out ahead of the store's proposed opening in spring/summer 2017.
The public area works are due to be completed at the end of March 2017.
The work to the public areas will be undertaken out of opening hours to minimise disruption to trading.
