It began life with a £500 loan and a small carpet shop in Shrewsbury – and furniture firm Alan Ward is now marking 45 years of growth and investment.

Alan and Joan Hopkins opened their first store in the county town in October 1970, and still has its flagship outlet in the town.

The Alan Ward group now employs a workforce of more than 100.

All four stores have seen multi-million investment over the decades with store re-designs. A £5 million purpose-built distribution centre was opened in 2003 to cope with the demand of booming sales.

The company is now building towards its 50th anniversary in 2020.

Mr Hopkins said: "To mark 45 years in business is obviously an achievement we are extremely proud of, but to see the growth from one small shop to one of the largest family-owned furniture businesses in the country today shows the true journey of success.

"I'd like to pay tribute to every member of staff who is working for the group today and of course those who have worked tirelessly for Alan Ward at various times during the last 45 years.

"We have many memories and stories to tell, and obviously have seen generations of families come through our stores.

"Our customers are at the heart of what we do, despite the online sales being a key area of growth, the stores are a vital part. People want and need to feel and see the quality and enjoy the face-to-face expert advice.

"Of course it is our customers we need to thank – without their support the 45-year history would not have been possible."

Carl Johnson, managing director who was appointed earlier this year, has embarked on a 2020 business plan.

He said: "The 45th anniversary year has certainly been a year of change and growth.

"We have plans for further growth and exciting changes during the next five years in preparation for the golden anniversary year in 2020."
