70 set to lose jobs at Oswestry cheese factory
Up to 70 people could lose their jobs at a cheese packing factory in Shropshire, it was revealed today.
The Oswestry-based Cheese Company is expected to lose its finance centre to Poland, after a merger between Arla Foods and Milk Link.
The Arla group - now the UK's biggest dairy company - confirmed it was proposing the transfer of Milk Link's finance base at Oswestry to Arla at Gdansk in Poland.
They also want to move other financial and logistical operations to Leeds.
The move would cost 70 office jobs at Oswestry.
Arla said it hoped the merger would see the cheese business as a whole grow, with Oswestry an important part of that growth.
In all, 350 people are employed in the factory, one of Oswestry's largest employers. The merger between Arla Foods and Milk Link was completed on October 1.
Spokesman Will Sanderson said: "We are now working on the integration of the two businesses. These proposals are subject to consultation with affected colleagues."
