But then again it was never going to work out now was it, pet? I mean, despite this "special relationship" Barack Obama and David Cameron were harking on about all week, it seems a simple Geordie accent was a step too far for the Americans.

Forget the economy or Libya. Could Colegate (and despite the singer's flashy smile we are not talking about toothpaste) derail all those very publicly staged and often twee displays of affection between our two great nations this week? The boys barbecuing - perrlease. More nauseous than a dose of summer food poisoning.

But Cheryl is unofficially our nation's sweetheart and if they can't take her to theirs because of the odd "alreet pet" then for Barack the star-spangled banger may not be enough.

And don't underestimate how her departure will dominate the headlines today as the President prepares to fly out of the UK.

The "will she, won't she" see-saw over this puzzling move across the pond for the Girls Aloud beauty has created almost as many column inches as the royal wedding.

But something tells me Cheryl Cole should look closer to home instead of blaming her potential US audience and their possible need for a translator.

If the spin doctors were working overtime with that homely picture of Michelle Obama and Sam Cam in the Downing Street kitchen it's nothing compared to Simon Cowell's continuing manipulation of that highly sought-after publicity parade.

Is anyone else very suspicious of the timing for Cheryl's exit? Not only does it come as Barack and Dave finish thrashing out the details of their new bromance, it also comes as the US X-factor's main rival, American Idol, celebrated its finale.

The suggestion from sources last night was that all the talk at the aftershow party was about Cheryl and shock at her departure.

It seems the bandwagon has started again and it's been loaded with as much controversy as possible.

Producers say it was the accent, Cheryl is claiming she was homesick so quit and a few others are adamant she didn't get on with fellow judge Paula Abdul - come on, that never stopped Cheryl and Dannii Minogue sharing the UK panel for several years.

Whatever the reason Simon Cowell is no doubt delighted that his new show will be as talked about as the one he left behind. A necessary move for him as we were all finally getting wise to his antics.

Let's face it, he has taken Cheryl along for a bumpy ride much as he does with most of his contestants and more importantly the audience.

So in this era of a new "special relationship" let's all take a moment to feel sorry for our American friends. We know what's in store for them and it's not pretty.
