Clowes and assistant Dorian Garner, who both departed Rangers last month, have taken over the reins from interim manager Simon Line, who steps down after his third spell in charge at Greenfields.

Clowes, who took training last night, will be in charge for tomorrow's crucial game at fellow Evo-Stik First Division South strugglers Bedworth.

He said: "I am delighted to be joining the football club. Everybody's been up front about the challenges ahead and I appreciate and can respond to that.

"Drayton will get our best shot. Obviously, there's a tight budget but Dorian and I have worked with tight budgets before.

"The club have some good players. That said, I'll be looking to strengthen the squad and have good contacts to achieve that."

Chairman Bob Mellor added: "We are pleased to acquire the services of a management team who have experience in Northern Premier League football. Their prime criteria will be to ensure the club's continued presence at this level of football."

Mellor also paid tribute to the way Line stepped in to help Town out after the departure of Lee Ebden just five games into season.

"We appreciate it was certainly not an easy task and thank him for his hard work," he said.

Clowes was with Stoke City as a youngster but left to play on the non-league circuit with the likes of Leek and Congleton before becoming involved in coaching at Biddulph Victoria and then management at Alsager Town, where he teamed up with Garner.
