Lambert's first home game in charge ended in a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

That was Wolves' fourth successive defeat at Molineux and left then 21st in the Championship table, out of the bottom three on goal difference.

"We're in a fight along with a few others," Lambert said when asked if Wolves were in a relegation fight. "There's still not many games gone – obviously the start Wolves had has put them in this dangerous position. But that's why we're here, to try and get them out of it.

"There are a lot of games to go but we have to defend better.

"Every job is tough. It doesn't matter where you go.

"It's a great club, the fanbase is huge and it's up to us to find lads who can do it and who can't.

"The lads that can do it will go with you, the ones that can't will struggle against the wave."

Wolves travel to QPR on Thursday knowing a top-six spot, which Lambert said was still the ambition when he arrived three weeks ago, look a remote possibility this season, despite £14million being spent on 12 new players.

When asked if those new players, many of whom are out of the team, would be given a chance to impress soon, Lambert said: "They've had their chance. They played a lot of games before I came in.

"I'm trying to see everybody as best I can. The Championship is unforgiving.

"Costa's come in and done well. He's only young. Tex and Cavaleiro have come in.

"There are young lads there but you've got to grasp the league really quickly otherwise you find yourself in this position.

"Everybody's in it together. There's no split or anything like that. You have to be ready for what's coming.

"The crowd is big here. There's been great players here and you have to live up to that.

"I've only been here for two games and we've played one of the teams that I think will be in and around it again this year.

"I understand the boos. We were up against a good side – we want to be as good as that and we've got a lot of work to do."
