Andy Thompson: Wolves need back-bone
Wolves stalwart Andy Thompson believes improving the club's record in the transfer market is crucial after a season he described as 'not good enough.'
Wolves limped to 14th in the Championship table after an underwhelming season littered with problems on and off the field.
Boss Kenny Jackett and recruitment chief Kevin Thelwell will be looking to make several additions this summer.
Thompson, who watches the vast majority of Wolves' games home and away in his role as a radio commentator, said Jackett's team need a new spine.
He said: "The biggest thing is making sure we recruit better this year – it wasn't the best last season.
"They need to be looking straight down the middle – a new striker, new central midfielder and a new centre-half to start with, and probably a left-back.
"Some strength in depth is needed in midfield – he was uncertain about who he wanted in here last year.
"He's not played Kevin McDonald for whatever reason so maybe they need a creative player alongside Jack Price.
"Getting the right kind of player to come into the squad – and experience – is key. It's a good young talented squad, but sometimes you need an older head."
With the club being up for sale, there is uncertainty around how much money is available for transfers.
Thompson, who played for Wolves between 1986 and 1997, questioned whether funds would be there for quality players.
He added: ""I don't know if the manager knows how much he's got to spend.
"The club needs stabilising. Is Steve Morgan going to throw money at it? I know he's going to back the club, but is he going to go out on a limb to buy quality?
"For a side like Wolves to finish 14th just isn't good enough– we should be challenging at the top."
