Midfielder Dave Edwards today signed a one-year contract extension at Wolves which will keep him at the club until 2017.

The midfielder's previous deal had been set to expire at the end of the current campaign.

Wolves head coach Kenny Jackett said: "I'm delighted that Dave has extended his contract, he's been a key player in my time here with some fantastic performances and some vital goals.

"With so many younger players around Dave's experience and leadership are going to be vital for the coming season.

"He brings a lot to the club, his leadership and personal qualities are very, very high.

"He got eight goals last year and he'll be wanting a role in the team where he can get in the box on a regular basis."

Jackett has begun the new campaign utilising a narrower midfield, as he looks to reshape his Bakary Sako-less side.

James Henry, Kevin McDonald, Conor Coady and Edwards formed a diamond at times during the opening-day win at Blackburn, with Benik Afobe given licence in a free role behind Nouha Dicko.

And Jackett believes those players behind the strikers have important parts to play.

He said: "I am looking for McDonald and Coady, certainly from the edge of the box, to up our shots from long range.

"Getting goals, efforts and assists from that area, while retaining a good brand of football and possession and making sure we're not too open, are the criteria from that particular area."

Edwards scored Wolves' winning goal at Ewood Park, albeit a controversial one, and set up Afobe's opener.

And the oldest player in Wolves' squad could play a key role in the team's promotion campaign this season, Jackett reckons.

He said: "His movement, his ability to either split the strikers or get behind the front two or interchange with them is very, very good.

"He'll always do a job defensively and out of possession is very accountable and quite often the first one to get and press people.

"He does bring a lot to it. Quite often he's not orthodox for the opposition to pick up and can become quite a key player for us.

"I don't think Dave is playing left midfield, it's more of a diamond formation with him doing a job defensively but he can close down right across the front line.

"In possession he has the freedom to move right across and perhaps more freedom from there than he gets in central midfield. I do think, going from that position, he can cause problems."
