Afobe notched 32 goals last season and was the country's joint-top scorer.

And the 22-year-old picked up where he left off by scoring with his and Wolves' first shot of the new campaign.

Afobe was utilised in a deeper number 10 role, which saw him roaming around the park and popping up all over midfield.

The striker said he much preferred his new position as he sometimes got 'bored' playing up front.

He and Kenny Jackett spoke throughout pre-season on what position would get the best out of the former Arsenal striker.

And Afobe said: "I think we both think my best position is that No 10 role.

"It's a long season and I'm sure I'll be playing in different positions, but at the moment myself and the manager are happy with me in that deeper role.

"I enjoy it – I get more of the ball. Sometimes as a centre forward I get a bit bored and start coming deep and the manager doesn't want me to come deep as a number nine. I'm really enjoying my football."

There is real competition for the forward places at Wolves with the arrival of Adam Le Fondre meaning that along with him, Afobe and Nouha Dicko the club has one of the division's most potent strike-forces.

Afobe welcomed that competition and felt 'like a kid' playing in a winning Wolves team.

He said: "I played with Alf (Le Fondre) for a short time at Reading for a month and he's one of the best finishers I've trained with and played with.

"Obviously, me and Nouha Dicko had a connection last season. It's definitely a strike-force the fans will be excited about.

"Last season, there were times when I went through on goal I just knew I was going to score."
