McDonald eyes Premier League with Wolves
Midfielder Kevin McDonald today admitted he joined Wolves for the challenge of taking them back to the Premier League.
The 24-year-old's move from Sheffield United on a three-year deal finally went through yesterday afternoon after a tense six days that included a stringent medical.
McDonald's decision hasn't gone down well in Sheffield, where fans are in uproar at the exit of their star player, who is regarded as the best midfielder in League One.
The Blades were prepared to increase McDonald's pay to persuade him to stay at Bramall Lane, but Wolves offered him more money.
And the Scot agonised over his decision before deciding the chance to help them back to the big time he last tasted in 2009-10 with Burnley was too good to turn down.
He said: "It was a tough decision and it's been going on for five days now. It was tough to say goodbye, but I think this is the right step and, hopefully, I can kick on.
"Wolves is such a big club and speaks for itself – only a couple of years ago they were in the Premier League.
"The new gaffer wants to get the club back there as soon as possible and I'm excited to be part of something here.
"I met the gaffer on Friday and he's stayed in touch and told me what he wants to do here and I've taken it all on board."
McDonald, who could make his debut at Bristol City on Saturday, has a reputation as a playmaker with a fierce shot in both feet.
He said: "I like to get on the ball and pass it around and, hopefully, can add a few goals this season."
But he is under no illusions of the difficulty of getting promoted after two years in League One with United.
He said: "For the team it's all about trying to get promoted. But League One is a tough league, as I know from playing at Sheffield United for two years.
"There's a good squad here with some talented players and we have certainly got the potential to get promoted. It's definitely something we should be aiming for."
McDonald knows striker Leigh Griffiths from Scotland Under-21s, while he has played under former Wolves midfielder Alex Rae twice – at Dundee and on loan at Notts County.
Wolves have sold out their 2,200 allocation for Bristol City.
