Wolves rookie Matt Doherty today insisted he is ready to stay in the team for good.

The 21-year-old Republic of Ireland under-21 international made his full League debut for Wolves in Sunday's 2-1 defeat to Cardiff when he replaced Kevin Foley.

Doherty became the latest youngster to get his big chance after Anthony Forde, David Davis and Danny Batth in the last year.

And after totalling 39 games on loan for Hibernian and Bury over the last 12 months, Doherty believes he is ready for an extended run in the Wolves side as he looks to keep his place for Friday's televised visit of Watford.

"I think I've done well enough in training, I've been pushing in training games," said Doherty.

"To be chucked into such a big game was a bit of a surprise but I've been patient for the last couple of seasons and hopefully now I'm in, I can stay in.

"I have confidence in myself – I've come back from a loan spell and I've had to wait, but now the gaffer has given me my chance, I hope I've done well enough to have taken it.

"The manager has shown he's not afraid to give the younger players a chance and I hope I play on Friday and for the remainder of the season."

Doherty was replaced by Foley in the 77th minute after going off with a tight calf but should be fit for the Watford game.

"I don't want me going off to hamper that – I felt good until I got the kick on the calf," he said.

"It cramped up; I didn't really want to come off but it would have looked worse if I'd stayed on."
