The club moved quickly to reinvest some of the £24m from the sales of Steven Fletcher and Matt Jarvis by snapping up the Austria Under-21 international on a four-year contract.

Boss Stale Solbakken also wants a winger with FC Copenhagen's £3m-rated Christian Bolanos and Manchester United's Robbie Brady among those on the radar, but

Margreitter was the latest new face through the door as he became the fifth signing of the summer.

Solbakken said: "We have been searching for a central defender and Georg fits the bill.

"He wanted to come to England and we have been following him for the last six or seven weeks.

"We could have signed him earlier but missed a game because he had a small ankle injury and we wanted to be absolutely 100 per cent sure."

Margreitter, who has been handed the No.34 shirt, said: "I am really happy about completing the move.

"I am very proud to sign for a club with such a big tradition in England and it's a dream come true.

"There were several English clubs watching me but it has all happened in the last few days and I am very excited.

"I have seen the stadium as well and have a good feeling about everything."

Meanwhile, captain Karl Henry has been ruled out of tomorrow's clash with Derby after picking up a hamstring injury in Tuesday's win against Barnsley.
