Boss McCarthy is aware the fans could turn again after his substitution sparked a poisonous atmosphere in the last two home league games
This triggered an angry response from the manager, who accused fans chanting for his head of being "mindless idiots".
But he has challenged his players to spark the Molineux masses in the right way against the Latics.
"It's for us to generate that atmosphere by playing well, putting a performance in, getting in front and giving the fans something to support rather than be sat there full of anxiety," said the boss.
"It's our responsibility to entertain them. People pay hard-earned money to watch us and they want to see us win.
Minority
"They haven't seen us win for a while and we have to change their perception of that by beating Wigan."
McCarthy wants to recreate the positive atmosphere generated in the comebacks during those two games, after they came from 2-0 down to draw against Swansea then pulled it back to 2-1 before having a 'goal' disallowed against Newcastle.
"Our fans have been brilliant. I had my rant at who I thought deserved to be ranted at and threw my toys out of the pram and they're all back in," he said.
"It was a small minority. It happens, but didn't they get back behind us when it was 2-1 and 2-2? Yyou could hardly hear yourself think then." And after a positive week on the training ground and two good performances against Manchester City, he insisted confidence was high in the camp.
"I don't see a lack of confidence in the group," he said.
