Wolves were in the market for a new keeper today after confirming that Marcus Hahnemann is leaving the club.
The departure of the popular 38-year-old American – who is set for talks with MLS side Seattle – leaves the door open for the arrival of a new man to challenge No.1 Wayne Hennessey and Carl Ikeme.
A name already in the frame is highly-rated Coventry keeper Kieron Westwood, who is out-of-contract at the Ricoh Arena.
"We think Carl and Wayne are capable of holding down the first-team role and we want the new man to be able to do the same," said Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey. "We see little point in recruiting someone who does not have that kind of potential – to step into the first team and play 10 or 12 games without a problem. He may be the third man in – but we want him to be capable of being the first man."
Hahnemann's contribution when Hennessey ran into difficulties in 2009-2010 was impressive and Moxey said: "His performances speak for themselves. But less obvious has been his role in the development of Wayne Hennessey."
Hahnemann played 39 games for Wolves after arriving on a free transfer from Reading in summer 2009.
Meanwhile Mick McCarthy admits it is unlikely to get any easier for Wolves to bring in the "finished article".
McCarthy admits that he has been frustrated in his efforts to recruit ready-made, Premier League footballers of a good age in the previous two summers.
The Wolves boss acknowledges the task will be just as difficult this summer too.
"We bought Premier League footballers last year and that's what we will try to do this year," said McCarthy.
