Shrewsbury Town safety will be job done, says Sam Ricketts

Shrewsbury boss Sam Ricketts says it will be a case of job done if Town secure their League One status on the penultimate weekend of the season.

Town, who go to Coventry tomorrow, could be safe from relegation fears without kicking a ball today if their rivals fail to achieve the required results.

Ricketts insists his team’s target since taking over in December was to steer clear of relegation ready to progress from the summer onwards.

Shrews were seven points clear of the drop, in 15th, when Ricketts was appointed but inconsistent results have meant they have battled it out with most of the bottom half of League One to stay out of the bottom four places.

Asked what securing safety would mean to him, Ricketts said: “Everything. It’s a huge thing, it’s the thing we’ve been aiming for since I’ve come in.

“It was to make sure we secure our place and make sure we have a summer to build, progress and get where we want to for next season.

“I think everyone will feel that bit of relief, we’re striving to get what we need. When you put so much into it I’m sure relief will be an emotion given the amount of hard work.”

If AFC Wimbledon fail to beat Wycombe at home then Shrewsbury’s survival is all-but confirmed thanks to a significantly superior goal difference.

“Obviously we’ll look at the results, but lets not hang our hat on anyone else. We’ve got a job to do tomorrow,” he added.

“I don’t really know (how I’ll spend the afternoon), I think Pep Guardiola was out on the golf course when City won the Premier League. I certainly won’t be on the golf course. But do you watch Soccer Saturday and bite your nails or do you do something else because you have no control over it?”

Midfielder Ollie Norburn had an injection in a troublesome Achilles injury this week to boost his chances of featuring.
