England defender Danny Rose was the subject of alleged racial abuse while playing for England in Montenegro last week.

The Three Lions have reported the abuse to governing body UEFA.

“There is no place for racism in football or society. Unfortunately football isn’t worse than anything else,” Ricketts said.

“Football basically highlights what’s going on in society as much as anything else. We’ve tackled the situation in this country very well, but we’ve still got room to go.

“You probably realise it when you go to eastern Europe, you seen how far we’ve come but how far there’s still to go.”

Former Wales international Ricketts added: “I’ve heard bits. Bits which are wrong. There is racism well over the line then you get the Welsh joke or something like that, which you could class as banter.

“There is a line, it can go too far and overstep the mark.

“You have to pursue it. If no-one makes a fuss about it, it probably gets brushed under the carpet.

“We live in a modern world and you’d like to think these prehistoric whatever-you-want-to-call-them have been left behind.”
