Town’s dramatic late comeback win against League One relegation rivals Wycombe eased mounting pressure on Ricketts, who was the subject of supporters’ chanting through the game.

Wycombe were the better side and took a second-half lead but Town levelled in the 87th minute through Omar Beckles and won through Ollie Norburn’s added time penalty.

Shrewsbury climbed from 20th to 18th, with just a point separating them and the bottom four, while they are just two points from 12th. Ricketts said, other than last season’s miraculous effort, his side are achieving what the club have managed in recent history, but he is pushing for more.

“Of course they have their opinion and I fully respect that,” said Ricketts when asked about some of the chanting from the Montgomery Waters Meadow stands,

“I’m as frustrated as them. Obviously it’s directed at me but I have to do what’s right. I have to try to get the team going. Where we lie in the table now, if you look back over 20 years or so – barring last season – 16th is the highest this team has finished.

“No I don’t want to be here, but we have to be realistic as well that this is, historically, where Shrewsbury have come and only once achieved more.

“I want to achieve more than that, don’t get me wrong, and I’m desperate to do so.

“But that will take a summer, it will take pre-season. The most important thing is get the wins that get us into the summer and stay in this league.”

The Town boss added: “Being a manager is a lonely place because everyone looks at you. When things are going well everyone looks and says well done. When they’re going badly everyone looks and goes sort it out.”

“Trust me, there’s no end to everyone’s desire to put things right and make things better.

“It’s a tireless thing, myself and all the self work incredibly hard to try to get it right and hopefully we can get it right more time than not.”

Town managed their first win in four games against the struggling Chairboys, who are winless in nine. Ricketts took stick from the crowd for leaving fans’ favourite Greg Docherty on the bench until late on, before he was eventually introduced before Town’s late rally.

Asked about remaining fused on what he believes in, Ricketts added: “I have a way of how I want to do things. Gradually we’re edging that way.

“But in the last 20 years this club has come where it’s come, I’m not saying I want to be there, I want to be higher up and push.

“I want to do what the club did last season but that will take time. I’m not trying to say this is where we’re want to be or good enough but we’re two points off 12th and (one from) the bottom four as well.”
