Shrewsbury confirmed the appointment of Wrexham boss Ricketts on a two-and-a-half year deal.

The former Wales international knows Town interim boss Danny Coyne through playing together with the Welsh national side and Eric Ramsay through FA Wales connections.

Caldwell confirmed that those relations were a critical part of the recruitment process, as well as the 37-year-old former defender fitting Town's blueprint of a promising, up-and-coming manager.

"We see him as a promising young manager that is the model we're always looking for, an ambitious manager that can hopefully take the club forward," said Town CEO Caldwell.

"Part of the process the chairman and I have been going over for three weeks is to ensure that the person that came in embraced the staff currently with us.

"The likes of Danny and Eric who Sam knows really well, they're in regular contact. That helps going forward.

"It's really important we've got somebody who fitted into that and didn't upset what we've got there.

"People bring in their own staff whereas Sam, with the relationship with Danny and Eric, it's really important we continue what we've done over the last five or six games."

Ricketts has only been in senior first team management for 24 games having taken over his first job with Wrexham in the summer.

In the three weeks since Shrewsbury sacked John Askey, Coyne and Ramsay have guided Salop to five wins from six in all competitions.

"Sam ticks a lot of the boxes we were looking for. Going forward, with his background of working with Danny and Eric and staff at the club, hopefully we can get the fruits of what we've put in," Caldwell added.

"Danny's out today to see Sam, they've been speaking the last couple of days. He now needs to understand where we're at.

"We'll take him up to the training ground, I'm sure he'll be impressed with that. He'll lean very much on Danny and Eric with their experience.

"Speaking to him this morning he says he doesn't want to upset what we've achieved in the last five or six games and it's really important we continue the progress in the next two or three weeks."
