John Askey: 'We are improving'

Shrewsbury boss John Askey feels his side are improving despite throwing away a victory in a dramatic finale with Gillingham.

Town almost crowned a comeback against the out-of-sort Gills with Ollie Norburn's 88th-minute goal after Lee Angol had drawn Town level.

But, as the clock struck 90, former Salop loanee Tom Eaves somehow worked his way through a number of bodies into the home box to finish low into the corner.

It means Askey's League One record reads just one win from 10 games. Town are 19th in the table ahead of Tuesday's trip to rivals Walsall.

When asked to review the first 10 games, Askey said: "We're improving. We needed to. But results don't show there's that much improvement.

"If people are watching they can see there is. But there are still things to improve on.

"We scored goals, created chances but at the other end we've not kept a clean sheet. There are things to work at.

"We're at a position we don't want to be. If we'd have got (the extra) two points we'd have gone up quite a few places, but we've got to keep working hard and cut those mistakes out."

Askey made a personnel change for the clash against the Kent visitors who had lost five on the spin in all competitions and not won in nine.

Alex Gilliead was dropped to the bench for Aaron Amadi-Holloway, while top scorer Angol was shifted out on to the left to accommodate the powerful centre-forward.

The Town chief was pleased with how Amadi-Holloway played in his first start since August 11.

Askey explained: "We'd got to look at trying to get the goal, obviously Lee's more likely to score than anybody, it's just about fitting them in.

"We know what a good player Aaron can be when he plays like he did today, when he showed aggression and energy.

"To get the two on the park, without leaving ourselves too wide open, was the way to do it.

"In the second half I thought it worked really well."
