The 21-year-old midfielder has also been the subject of speculation from Town’s divisional rivals Sunderland this summer.

The Scot, a lifelong Gers fan, is highly rated but was surprisingly told he was not part of Steven Gerrard’s plans for this season.

Town boss John Askey is searching for midfield options even after Thursday’s capture of Anthony Grant, with star schemer Jon Nolan heading for the exit door.

Docherty, who has been capped at Scottish youth level, only joined Rangers from Hamilton Academical in January this year for £650,000.

The creative, energetic box-to-box midfielder was seen as one of Scottish football’s young stars as he joined Ibrox, but after 39 outings last term, has not featured in Gerrard’s Europa League side so far this summer.

Askey and Town are working around the clock to secure possible replacements before next the transfer deadline, which is at 5pm next Thursday.

He said: “The one thing about bringing your own players in is that it’s a fresh start.

“You get to work with players you’ve done due diligence on and they become my players.”
