John Askey will serve two-match touchline ban with Shrewsbury Town – after kicking puddle at fourth official
John Askey will serve a two-match touchline ban as Shrewsbury's league campaign begins – after kicking a puddle at a fourth official while in charge of Macclesfield.
Eight minutes before the end of a a 3-2 victory at Woking on March 30, with his side 2-1 up, Askey kicked a puddle and soaked fourth official James Durkin at the Kingfield Stadium.
That charge of improper conduct was one of three he was subject of in the officials' report from the game, alongside abusive/insulting words and further improper conduct with a match steward.
Askey is not allowed in the dugout for Saturday's clash with Bradford or the trip to Charlton a week later. It appears his first proper taste of the Montgomery Waters Meadow technical area will be the EFL Cup visit of Burton on August 14.
"I think the important thing is that you keep a level head," Askey said of his matchday demeanour.
"Having said that I am suspended for the first two games for kicking a puddle. That's how calm I am!
"I got sent off for kicking a puddle. Nowadays you can get sent off for anything! It was on telly as well.
"You can talk to them on the bench and go down at half-time. It doesn't make too big a difference. Obviously I would've liked to have been on the sidelines for the first two games but it gives me chance to look and sometimes you're better looking from afar.
"It's not something I'm too concerned about. I'll struggle to find a puddle at the moment.
"I'll be somewhere where I can make myself heard to the bench. They'll probably be sick of me."
