Jermaine Grandison back training with Shrewsbury Town

Shrewsbury favourite Jermaine Grandison is back training with his former club – while the Shropshire Star understands reports linking Ipswich with Omar Beckles are unfounded.

Defender Grandison, 27, was an extremely popular figure in blue and amber throughout his five-year spell, in which he made 176 appearances in all competitions. But he has not played competitively since April 2016 and has been plagued by persistent hip problems that have led to a number of operations.

“He obviously had a serious injury and an operation and he’s trying to get back to see how far he can go with it,” said manager John Askey.

“He’s been working hard but working on your own is different to football training. We’ll see how it goes and how far he can go with him getting back.

“That’s how it is. It’s not really one that we’re looking at but you never know.

“He did well (here) and is living local.

“There’s nothing lost because he’s got quality. If we could get him fit then you don’t know. But it’s more for Jermaine to see if he can get back or not.”

Fellow defender Beckles, meanwhile, is reported to have attracted interest from former boss Paul Hurst’s new club Ipswich.

But it is believed the Tractor Boys have shown no interest and not made an approach for Beckles, who still has two years left on his Town deal.
