Shrewsbury Town have sealed the signing of Oldham Athletic forward Aaron Amadi-Holloway on a two-year deal.

The powerful frontman, who had a year remaining on his Latics deal, joins Town on an undisclosed fee. He scored four times and laid on seven assists in just 11 starts last term.

The 25-year-old Welshman, who was capped at under-17 and under-19 level, began his career at Bristol City and will make his Shrewsbury bow at Ashton Gate in tomorrow's friendly.

He becomes boss John Askey's fifth signing and joins Stefan Payne, Fejiri Okenabirhie and Lenell John-Lewis in the forward ranks. Askey wants to see Amadi-Holloway unlock and fulfil his potential in blue and amber.

The boss said: "I think he's different to what we've got. He's a player who can get hold of the ball and is big and strong. He can enable us to play and get up the park.

"He's pretty similar to what Carlton (Morris) was last year.

"I don't think he's fulfilled his potential yet. I think he needs a run of games that'll hopefully get his confidence going and I think he could be a very good player that we could push on."

Amadi-Holloway, who has previously played for Wycombe and Fleetwood, made 42 appearances in all competitions for relegated Oldham last season, mainly from the bench as he found himself behind Eoin Doyle and Craig Davies in the pecking order.

"He's got the ability to play higher. Hopefully he can show that at Shrewsbury," Askey added.

"I think it (dropping down) happens to a lot of lads, especially if they're playing at a level when they're young. It's hard to get going.

"Sometimes they need to drop down to get a lot of games and then they'll come good – as you've seen with a lot of the Shrewsbury players, who've had to go to non-league to get the games in and fulfil potential.

"Aaron hasn't done that, he's stayed in and around a really good level. Hopefully at Shrewsbury he can hit the ground running, get the games in he needs and it'll snowball."

Askey is confident that Amadi-Holloway possesses the ability and attributes to improve on his goal ratio and believes his new frontman will find the slice of luck that allows the goals to flow.

"No he's not scored as many as he'd have liked at all," said the boss.

"Sometimes it takes that little bit of luck to get you going, because he's certainly shown he's got the ability to do that, he's got all the attributes to do so.

"All we can do is work with him, on his movement and hopefully his goal ratio will go up.

"You need competition throughout the park. That's what we're trying to create. Obviously you need players in certain areas. I had to wait for Aaron, I've been trying for quite a while and that's the same with others."
